CELEBRITY x FASHION: LADY GAGA ON NEW MEDS AND READY FOR HER PARENTS TO PICK HER UP

Someone is transitioning to new meds.

Lady Gaga has me concerned. After the cracktackular Chewbacca-in-drag get up of a few days ago, her Wednesday-Munster-Barbie look in Hong Kong is frightening. You would think a dress made of violet hair would turn my hair white but in fact Gaga’s attempt at normal creeps me out. The Moschino dress is super cute and has that whimsical retro chic vibe but the Banshee-witch hair is chilling. She looks like a wealthy child ghost in a haunted manor – with a subdued agression bubbling quietly just below the surface.

FASHION x SHOPPING: EXCESSORIES – H&M HIRE FASHION NUT-JOB ANNA DELLO RUSSO

I couldn’t be more delighted about H&M’s latest collaboration. Gone are is the quirky Euro-boho-chic brought to the table by Marni (loving my massive Pat Butcher earrings BTW, Boho) – say hello again to fashion’s most adorable nut-job and fashion maniac, Anna Dello Russo. I almost can’t take her cray-cray fabulous-ness. She FIEEEEERCE and gets a regular finger wag and snap for her kooky-dook exhuberant styling.

You might recall in ADR’s front row tips from fashion week she telled us that:

Nothing succeeds like excess.

I couldn’t agree more. The more yourself you are, the better. I think ADR has a natural love of fashion as an expression of oneself, as opposed to Gaga’s use of it for ‘art’ and, let’s face it a cover-up and attention-seeking tool.

From her passion for OTT millenry, a penchant for military and a bling fetish, I can’t think of a better fashion mind than Vogue Nippon’s creative director to design an accessories line for the top budget retailer. So what’s on offer at H&M?

FASHION x CELEBRITY: LADY GAGA GIVES US CHEWBACCA IN DRAG – WITH A DASH OF ELTON

What. The. F*ck.

There are a few WTF moments going on today. First of which is Lady Gaga’s Hong Kong arrival get up. Full-length purple knotted hair dress, white platforms, red sunglasses and an ’80s Elton-before-he-was-gay hat. I rilly, rilly don’t get this. It’s like Chewbacca in drag as Elton John (before he was gay, Elton, not Chewbacca).

It’s not Gaga’s first ‘hair’ look. She’s worn coiffed dressed on numerous occasions. The only single element of this particular look I appreciate is the framed back.

Judgey-Wudgey: 2011 MTV Movie Awards

The MTV Movie Awards is the annual opportunity for young actresses to look older by dressing slutty and for older actresses to look younger by dressing slutty. Expect tight, short and shiny dresses with odd-looking platform shoes.
So without further adieu, let’s judge.

No better example than Amanda Bynes in Herve Leger bandage dress. I’ll give it to her, everyone and their mother has been wearing a coloured/print look with nude shoes. Amanda chose a nude dress that actually looks like a undergarment for a 40-year-old and paired it with turquoise (ick) tassled (ick) peeptoe (yawn) platform (yawn) shoes by Christian Louboutin (yawn). I’m so over both designers trademark pieces displayed here and on any celebrity who stands still for 5 seconds.

With a spectacular scandal going on and the media on hers (and Leo DiCaprio’s) heels, Blake Lively needed to turn the sexy down. This is her turning the sexy down. She chose Michael Kors but asked for a size down given it covers most of the thigh. Not feeling the stacked boho-bangles with this look. It called for some clean and modern accessorizing.
Good old Cameron Diaz in Philip Lim 3.1. She knows how to show the young ones how it’s done when you’re slowly making your way over the Hollywood hills. Permatan. Short, tight, shiny and black. It’s desperate with a dash of classy. Love the hair and the shoes.
An adorable mini-star, Elle Fanning (sister of Dakota). A cute floral playsuit by D&G with floral wedges. So appropriate for a 16-year-old. Only she’s 13. Thank God the hair and make-up were kept young and fresh…given that at her age she shouldn’t even be styling her face or hair. Only on an MTV red carpet will you see both a 13-year-old and a 38-year-old in short playsuits.
One of my favourite looks of the evening. Emma Stone in Bottega Veneta. Loving these deeper oranges with black lace. So unusual. Also she’s given up the blonde ambition and gone back to her natural colour.
It’s short, it’s got more sequins and embellishments than all the Olympic figure skating competitors combined. It’s Emma Watson in Marchesa. And some silver stripper shoes. Poor thing is going through the in-between stage of growing out the pixie-cut.

Gossip Girl’s Jessica Sohr has me on the fence with this…whatever it is by Alice + Olivia. I like the print. I like the silhouette. I just don’t like it combined. There is something disturbing about the lining up of the big paisley over where her ovaries would be and the ‘paisley marks the spot’ over her special purpose.

Need I even comment on this one? I go as far to say Kristen Stewart in Balmain. To think they rarely lend out their stuff to actresses for the red carpet.
It’s a double header for Balmain. Here we have Leighton Meester adorned in every girl’s fantasy, a broken mirror dress. This is something Lady Gaga would wear to bed. I just don’t think edgy fashion suits such a classically beautiful girl.  The dress has enough going on without the torture chamber shoes.
This is Reece Witherspoon’s vision of edgy. Nothing is working for me here. The Zac Posen Flintstone dress. The nothing nude shoes. Blah.

Kate Middleton: Look, be an old lady

Isn’t it interesting that before Kate got married I complained that she was dressing far too conservatively and old for her age as her royal engagements increased and that I felt there was royal puppetry going on to make her the anti-Diana. I’ll forget that there are some out there who thought that Kate’s modest suit and matching sensible navy shoes were fine for a  woman of barely 30. I’ll also forget that many out there thought that her wedding dress wasn’t horribly boring and couldn’t be used as visual valium.

Well here she is at the Epsom Derby, a rather royal affair dressed like a lady in her late 50s who has kept a tidy figure. I’m sorry Kate lovers out there, she’s in a style rut. Be it enforced by the palace or not, it just won’t do. She’s young, she’s beautiful, she’s a frikkin princess. The public wants fashion. Not more sensible jackets and pearls please.

I respect that she favours affordable UK brands Reiss, LK Bennet and Joseph. What I do not respect is her reluctance to break the mold and wear something a) in colour and b) intended for someone under the age of 40.
I’m still not ready to discuss the hat. I may never be.
