Manic Wednesday: More Red Hair Not To Dye For

Well it’s been a busy week in fashion. The royal wedding was like a catwalk show for what to expect at racing and weddings this summer. Of course I had to check in and wave my judging wand over proceedings. I hope you enjoyed the coverage.
So there is SO much to catch up on. Plenty of celebs have been walking red carpets in New York, Washington DC. Their very appearances demand a judging so I’ll be getting my critic goggles on (opposite of rose tinted lenses) in a big way over the next few days. ‘Today I wish I was wearing’ will be making a comeback among other regular features. I’ve chosen my 5 picks for summer maxi dresses and I’ll certainly give tips on how to wear a maxi.
In the meantime could someone please tell me what is going on in celebrity hair circles? There is a literal outbreak of bad dyeing decisions. It’s very possible that Rihanna is to blame. Celebrities are popping up all over the place with red hair. Maybe Rihanna is just the puppet of an evil taste-maker up in his/her ivory tower laughing into a talking mirror at two more major dye jobs?
The ‘It Girl’ of the moment (well according to Uncle Karl anyway – he seems to think she can sell bags), Blake Lively is living up to her name with an eye-popping pinkish strawberry blonde. On Blake, it’s very odd and unexpected choice. Job done. We’re talking about her. Last week the web was alight with comparisons with the Little Mermaid. No surprise that Rihanna was compared to Jessica Rabbit recently.
So it seems that teenage rebellion look-changing and/or Disney lookalike are in. Remember brunette was the colour to go for a starlet looking to edge out her image and seem, you know, deep and stuff? It’s Madonna’s go-to ‘take me serious’ look. Well it seems that young Hollywood is rebelling even against rebelling norms.
Next up is one of the smuggest young women in town, Scarlet Johannson. I was speechless when I saw this. No surprise that she debuted this look at the White House Correspondents Dinner last week. She was taking a stab at seeming cerebral and, you know, like interesting and stuff. It’s hideous, Scarlet. I have a headache caused by the amount of eye rolling in response to a girl called Scarlet dyeing her hair red.
Who does red hair suit, I hear you ask? Finally good news for us tanning denigrates, pale women do it best. Darker skin tones and red hair just looks weird. In order to get the striking look red hair demands you need that contrast. Case in point Florence Welsh of ‘And The Machine’ fame:
Fabulous. More on her amazing style later.

Rihanna’s hair – the bane of my life

I need to get something straight here. I’m not a Rihanna fan in terms of music or fashion. In fact ‘fan’ would generally be the opposite to how I feel about the latter. I gave her kudos a few weeks ago for a very chic and casual dinner look, post Vogue cover and hoped that this would be a turn up for the books in terms of her professional and personal styling. Then the frizz returned. Raggedy Anne, Ronald McDonald mused many a fashion reporter, I am just frustrated that she will not give up on that hair colour and hire a good frikkin stylist already.

Then she hit the stage for a duet at the Academy of Country Music Awards this weekend. I just don’t know what to do with this girl. She is stubborn about that hair colour but molds herself to the medium. For Vogue she was statuesque, like an old-Hollywood movie star, for Rolling Stone she was every working man’s dream with huge curly hair and very little else. At the ACM Awards she was every bit the classy old-syle country croonette. Her new pixie cut leaves me baffled. Yes it is a step up from the 1980’s Whitney Huston frizz to Dionne Warwicks’ classic short ‘do but this cut really ages Rihanna. The Versace fringed dress doesn’t help at that length. It’s just not youthful. She looks like she could step off the stage, into mom-jeans and a sweatshirt and pick up the kids from soccer practice.
Rihanna, hire Rachel Zoe. She knows her shit and will have you on best dressed lists in seconds.

Rihanna looking chic – FINALLY

Love this look. Simple modern & sporty. Simple, colour-block dress, oversized bag and flats. No boobs or no bum on display.

This is the best Rihanna has ever looked in my opinion…and I include that recent Vogue cover because photoshopping and a team of 50+ were present there. Here she may have only used three stylists to pull this together.

For those of you who don’t get the serious-ness of how bad she usually looks, here’s a reminder:
Finally the hair goes with SOMETHING.
